Our WomanKind Scar Recovery service  helps women safely manage their recover after a C- section birth or abdominal surgery such as a hysterectomy with qualified a Physiotherapy they can trust.

What is Scar therapy?

Scar therapy helps to mobilise the tissues of the scar and underlying layers to help them glide and move more easily. This can help aid healing by increasing the circulation, as well as aiding the movement and cosmetic appearance of the scar. Scar therapy can help manage tight and restricted scars and help with symptoms of itching, overhang, lumpy or painful scars.

Scar therapy can include advice on caring for your scar, teaching self-management techniques to desensitize and mobilise the scar, as well as specialized therapy input including hands on manual therapy techniques carried out by a highly skilled Physiotherapist to massage and promote facial glide of the scar and surrounding tissues. Silicon products may also be recommended to promote healing and recovery of your scar.

Physiotherapy can also review other factors influencing scar healing including posture, core strength, nutrition, hydration activity and ergonomics.

Who is the Scar Therapy service for?

The scar service is for anyone with an abdominal surgical scar including from c-section, hysterectomy, tummy tuck or bowel surgery.

1 in 4 babies born in the UK are born via c-section deliveries. With C-sections being the most common surgery carried out in the UK, with the numbers rising in recent years.

Scar therapy can be commenced from … weeks after surgery, but this can be dependent on your stage of healing and if there has been any delayed healing or wound infections. Usually by … weeks we can commence gentle and graded scar therapy techniques.

What can I expect from my scar therapy session?

Your Initial assessment session will involve a discussion around your medical history and previous surgery details. We will go through a number of questions regarding your symptoms and also the goals you have for treatment.  There will be a practical element of the assessment where you will have to partly undress to allow the Physiotherapist to view and assess your abdomen in different positions including sitting, standing and lying. Please wear comfortable and loose fitting clothes that can be easily moved to allow access to your tummy region for the therapist to see and feel the scars.

The Physiotherapist will discuss the best suited package to meet your specific needs for your scar therapy management plan. This will include a number of sessions focused specifically on scar management techniques and may include recommendations for products which may help optimize your recovery.

Please do not hesitate to contact us to arrange an initial assessment and begin the journey to improving the look, feel and mobility of your scars. Our Scar therapy practitioners within our WKH team include: EE and LH
