Diastasis Recti Rehab

Diastasis Recti Rehab Physiotherapy in Sheffield

Our WomanKind Diastasis Recti Rehab service helps women with the management of their recovery from a Diastasis Recti, also known as a Diastasis Recti Abdominus, in a safe and supportive environment.

What is Diastasis Recti Rehab?

Diastasis Recti is where the two muscles that run down the middle of your stomach separate during pregnancy, and can vary depending on the rate at which your baby grows.

Diastasis Recti Rehab Physiotherapy is a programme dedicated to managing your recovery from Diastasis Recti, created by specialist women’s health Physiotherapists who can help you retore your abdominal and core function safely.

Who is Diastasis Recti Rehab for?

Diastasis Recti Rehab Physiotherapy is suitable for women from 2 to 4 weeks postpartum and beyond. Before booking your first appointment, we ask you to check with your consultant if they think this treatment is suitable for your stage of recovery, as all pregnancies and deliveries are different, and can result in different complications. If you are discharged from your consultant or are 6 months postpartum this may not be necessary.

How Can Diastasis Recti Rehab Help?

Diastasis Recti Rehab includes multiple in-depth assessments to help determine your recovery plan such as:

  • Postural screening
  • Scar assessment (if applicable from having a C-Section)
  • Screening for any adhesions or restrictions that contribute to the condition.
  • All of these assessments are combined with a conditioning exercise programme specifically tailored to your body to improve your pelvic floor and core strength as well as implementing manual therapy to correct any imbalances in your core muscles.
  • Breathing & Core Screening
  • ovement Screening

What to expect from your Diastasis Recti Rehab?

For your first Diastasis Recti Rehab Physiotherapy appointment, it is helpful, but not compulsory, to undress to your underwear to make the assessment easier. Our qualified Physiotherapists will ask to feel around your stomach in order to make the correct judgments for your treatment plan, but if you feel too uncomfortable to undress, then please wear something similar to a vest top and shorts.

During the Diastasis Recti Rehab appointment you will also be asked to perform a series of movements to test your range and restrictions at that particular point in your recovery. In addition to this, your Physiotherapist will touch and assess any scars to make sure you are recovering properly.

If you find that this is too sensitive or painful, our Physiotherapists will work with you to find a way to make the assessment more comfortable, and teach you methods to desensitise your scar tissue. We will also measure your Diastasis Recti and assess it for any issues such as herniation to ensure we are tailoring your programme to your recovery needs.

If a pelvic floor examination is required, we tend to leave this until after your first appointment so you are more comfortable with your physiotherapist, and are completely aware of your rehabilitation plan. When this part of the assessment takes place you will be asked to undress to your underwear from the waist down, and a cover will be provided to protect modesty. A chaperone can also be provided if necessary.

At the end of your Diastasis Recti Rehab Physiotherapy appointment, you will leave with a unique management plan, including strategies to improve the strength of your core. This can include a retraining programme, home stomach massages, and a rehabilitation plan to get you back to your pre-pregnancy desired level of activity. We may also recommend having a scar massage with our MLD therapist and explore our scar therapy treatments too.  Scar Therapy
