C-Section Recovery Physiotherapy in Sheffield

What is C-Section Recovery Physiotherapy?

Our WomanKind C-Section Recovery Physiotherapy service helps women safely manage their recovery after a C- section birth with qualified Physiotherapy they can trust.

A C-Section also known as a Cesarean is an operation to deliver your baby through an incision made in your stomach and womb.

C- Section Recovery Physiotherapy is a programme dedicated to postpartum women that have had a cesarean birth and need help with their physical recovery through expert advice and guidance.

Who is C-Section Recovery Physiotherapy for?

C-Section Recovery Physiotherapy is suitable for women 4 to 6 weeks postpartum and onwards.

Before booking your appointment it is important to check with your midwife or consultant if they believe you are at a safe stage to start receiving treatment, as each delivery is different with various potential complications on the body.

How can C-Section Recovery Physiotherapy Help?

Our WomanKind C- Section Recovery Physiotherapy service includes multiple in-depth assessments to determine your recovery plan, such as a postural screening to assess the strength of your core and mobility of your C- Section.

Additionally, the programme includes manual therapy for your myofascial scar tissue release, and a tutorial on the best self-massage techniques for you to try at home in order to help the recovery rate of your cesarean.

You will also receive advice on specific mobility and conditioning exercises to help strengthen your pelvic floor and core after childbirth.

What to Expect from C-Section Recovery Physiotherapy?

For your first C-Section Recovery Physiotherapy appointment it would be helpful, but not compulsory, to undress your underwear to help us assess you efficiently. During the assessment, we will need access to your C-section scar, so undressing will make this much easier for us. We understand if you’re uncomfortable doing this, however, so our experienced team will be able to work around this if necessary. In this case, please wear loose fitting clothing such as shorts and a vest top.

During the appointment, you will be asked to perform a series of movements and a qualified physiotherapist will ask to feel your stomach, including your scar, in order to assess your progress and create a bespoke recovery plan for you. If you find the pressure on your scar too uncomfortable, we can work around it to make you as comfortable as possible and teach you techniques to desensitise your cesarean scar.

If a pelvic floor examination is required, we tend to do this after your first appointment when you are a little more comfortable. Our qualified physiotherapists will ask you to undress from the waist down to complete the examination and provide you with a cover to protect your modesty. A chaperone can be provided if necessary.

At the end of the C-Section Recovery Physiotherapy appointment you will be given a bespoke management plan to aid your recovery, including strategies to to improve the condition of your cesarean scar, a core retraining programme and rehabilitation programme to help you reach your desired level of pre-pregnancy activity. We may recommend you to work with our massage therapists for work on the scar.
