What to Expect from C-Section Recovery Physiotherapy?

For your first C-Section Recovery Physiotherapy appointment it would be helpful, but not compulsory, to undress your underwear to help us assess you efficiently. During the assessment, we will need access to your C-section scar, so undressing will make this much easier for us. We understand if you’re uncomfortable doing this, however, so our experienced team will be able to work around this if necessary. In this case, please wear loose fitting clothing such as shorts and a vest top.

During the appointment, you will be asked to perform a series of movements and a qualified physiotherapist will ask to feel your stomach, including your scar, in order to assess your progress and create a bespoke recovery plan for you. If you find the pressure on your scar too uncomfortable, we can work around it to make you as comfortable as possible and teach you techniques to desensitise your cesarean scar.

If a pelvic floor examination is required, we tend to do this after your first appointment when you are a little more comfortable. Our qualified physiotherapists will ask you to undress from the waist down to complete the examination and provide you with a cover to protect your modesty. A chaperone can be provided if necessary.

At the end of the C-Section Recovery Physiotherapy appointment you will be given a bespoke management plan to aid your recovery, including strategies to to improve the condition of your cesarean scar, a core retraining programme and rehabilitation programme to help you reach your desired level of pre-pregnancy activity. We may recommend you to work with our massage therapists for work on the scar.

So often in clinic I hear that patients didn’t realise there was so much they could do to impact their symptoms. When a women comes in having taken control of their health they change in everyway. I love when she tells you about how she is physically better and feels it, but then talks about all the ways she understands her body more.
