Triathlon Star Raises Funds for Sepsis Trust After Friend’s Death

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Sheffield triathlon star raises funds for The UK Sepsis Trust following friend’s sudden death

Athlete Caz Kay competes all over Europe for Great Britain in triathlon and duathlon events. Along with her Sheffield based sponsor, Katie Bell Physiotherapy & Wellness she’s organised a charity run to raise funds for The UK Sepsis Trust following the untimely death of a close family friend. The 7.5K run will be held at 9am on Monday 7th May in Millhouses Park.

PE teacher and mother of two, Caz was left devastated earlier this year when a close family friend, Dan Hallam, died. Dan thought he was coming down with the flu as he opened presents with his 9 year old daughter on Christmas day, however  his condition worsened and by Boxing Day he was in hospital fighting for his life, having being diagnosed with Sepsis. The blood poisoning disease spread throughout his body and a medical team later had to amputate both his legs. Dan died aged 43, just 2 weeks after being diagnosed.

Sepsis develops when the immune system releases chemicals into the bloodstream to fight an infection but causes inflammation throughout the entire body instead. This can, potentially lead to multiple organ failure and death. Earlier identification and treatment across the UK would save 14,000 lives and result in 400,000 fewer days in hospital per year, saving the economy as much as £2.8 billion annually.

Caz Kay said: Dan was a close family friend of my husbands. They grew up like brothers. His heartbroken family and friends are now campaigning to raise awareness of the killer condition that claimed his life. Sepsis kills around 44,000 people in the UK every year’,

Katie Bell, proprietor and principal physiotherapist said: ‘The UK Sepsis Trust is one of the four charities we’re raising money for at our Charity Run on the 7th May. It’s a charity particularly close to our sponsored athlete Caz Kay.’
