I often recommend good quality vitamin supplements to our clients at Katie Bell Physiotherapy & Wellness – I thought I would tell you why.
Our bodies are under a lot of strain: life pressures, lack of sleep or poor sleep quality, hormonal changes, sitting at desks or driving and family pressures. Couple with a bad diet or food sources that are nutritionally depleted and bam – injury, pain, illness here we come.
But ‘I shop at Waitrose Katie’ or ‘We buy organic food Katie’… this still does not account for the fact that the soil we grow things in has 60-70% less essential vitamins, minerals, and essential ions than those needed for plants to grow and provide our daily recommended allowance. The foods we are eating (organic or not) aren’t nutritionally sound, throw a load of chemicals in and we may as well eat the cardboard box we bought it in.
Reasons why we need to supplement:
- Healthy Aging – as we get older our ability to absorb nutrients from food decreases
- Medications can interfere with nutrient absorption too
- Research shows it can help reduce cardiovascular problems
- Boosts immunity and helps fight illness
- Supports healthy hair, skin and nails
- Supports eye health
- Reduces joint problems or early onset of arthritis.
I could list a million reasons why we ALL should be supplementing. I take a supplement every day, mine has Vitamin C, D, B6, B12, K, Folic acid, L Arginine and L Citruline in. I take it all year round and I eat a good diet with lots of fresh produce, meat from a local butchers and good quality eggs. My supplement is fab, it’s a powder I mix in water. It’s quick and easy to take, not like swallowing those ghastly pebble sized tablets.
Touch wood, I’ve never had the flu, have about 1 cold every 2-3 years, sleep well and I don’t really suffer from joint problems (except for when I spend too long pummelling you all!) I would say I’m fit and healthy.
